1/13/20 School Board Meeting Guide

Last night’s board meeting was very short. Two main issues were raised:

Student Concern about Graduation Requirements

Emmaus High School senior Nate Garcia addressed the board about graduation requirements. He questioned whether students who transfer from charter schools should be held to the same graduation requirements as students who spend all four years at EHS, as well as whether the high school guidance department advised him properly when he transferred. Watch here. (Sidenote: I featured the artwork and awards Nate received as an EHS student recently in my post Excellence in the Arts at East Penn.)

Update on Start Time Timeline

Superintendent Kristen Campbell provided an update on the task force studying a later start time for secondary students in the district. Supporting the task force’s efforts is a current study of the high school bell schedule, which hasn’t changed substantially since the 1960s. The administration plans to present one or more proposals to modernize the schedule this coming June. No changes would take effect until the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. Watch here. The district is offering the entire community an information and feedback session about use of time at the high school next Tuesday (January 21st), from 6:30-7:30pm in the EHS auditorium. See here for additional details.
